Royal St Davids Golf Club

Royal St. David's Golf Club - Clwb Golff Brenhinol Dewi Sant

Nationally and internationally renowned, Royal St David's is one of Wales' premier golf courses. It provides a challenging test of golf in a breathtaking setting in the most beautiful and scenic part of the Principality and dominated by the brooding presence of Harlech Castle.

Established in 1894, Royal St David's Golf Club is the home of one of the finest traditional links courses in the world. The undulating fairways and fast true greens are all that would be expected of a championship links course.

In 2009 the Club hosted the S4C Wales Ladies Championship of Europe, won by Karen Stupples of England, and the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship, won by Azahara Munoz of Spain. In 2010 the Club hosted the Welsh Open Stroke Play Championship and the Ryder Cup Wales PGA Welsh National.

In 2011 the Club hosts the Welsh Ladies' Close Championship and the Boys Home Internationals, and in 2013 the prestigious R&A sponsored Jacques Leglise Trophy between GB&I Boys and the Continent of Europe.

The course is rated 43rd in Golf World’s Top 100 courses in Britain & Ireland and 45th in Golf Monthly’s Top 100 in the UK & Ireland, 73rd in the Golf Digest Best 100 courses outside the USA and Number 1 in National Club Golfers Top 100 Affordable Courses.

Royal St David's announces new Professional

Gareth Lewis Lunapic
Gareth Lewis, who will join the Club in March 2012

We are pleased to announce that Mr Gareth Lewis will become the Club's new Professional in March 2012 on the retirement of current longstanding Profesional, John Barnett.

Gareth, who hails from Pencoed near Bridgend, is a fluent Welsh speaker, married with two young children. After graduating from Swansea University in 2001 with a degree in Materials Science and Engineering he began his golfing career at the Belfry, during which time he spent 6 months at the Nad Al Sheba Club in Dubai as a reward for being one of the Belfry’s top trainees.

Gareth remained at the Belfry as Golf Services Manager until 2005, when he moved back to Wales to head up the golf department and initially set up Machynys Peninsula Golf and Country Club, the first Nicklaus design course in Wales.

In 2007 Gareth joined the PGA, based at the Golf Union of Wales offices at Celtic Manor, where he manages the business affairs of the PGA in Wales and oversees the development of the professional game. During this time he has developed a network of quality coaches throughout the country and has successfully implemented the PGA Coach Education Structure. PGA Director of Education and Career Development, Kyle Phillpots said; “Gareth has done a great job and I think golf in Wales is in a much better place because of the work he has done and he can be proud of his achievements.”

As well as his vast experience in the field of coaching, Gareth also specialises in custom club fitting; a service he looks forward to implementing at Royal St. David’s. Gareth is very excited about embarking on the next chapter in his professional career and is relishing the challenge ahead.  “John has done a great job at Royal St. David’s and has been a fine ambassador for both the Club and the PGA and I hope I can emulate his success.”

The Club is look forward to greeting Gareth and his family in March and hope that they have as much success and happiness as John and Beryl have enjoyed.
